RC Float Sizing Calculator

The RC Float Sizing Calculator gives starting dimensions for floats on an RC seaplane or float conversion. Float size and placement affect water handling, takeoff run, prop clearance, balance, and how easily the model releases from the water.

What this calculator does

This tool is useful for pilots adding floats to a landplane, designing custom foam or balsa floats, or checking whether a float set is close to the required size. Enter the airplane length, wingspan, and prop-to-CofG distance, then review estimated float length, height, width, separation, curved nose section, and step location. Example: if a model has a long nose and the CofG is far behind the prop, the step and mount location must still place the airplane properly on the floats. Use the calculator as a starting point, then adjust for hull shape, finished model weight, water conditions, and real taxi testing. Float installation still requires judgment, but this gives a useful first layout.

In practical terms: It estimates starting RC float dimensions and step placement based on aircraft length, wingspan, and CofG position.

How to use it

Enter the aircraft dimensions and unit system, then use the calculated float dimensions as a starting point for the float design.

Example calculation

Size a set of floats for a 1200mm wingspan model before cutting foam or comparing commercial float sets.
